I fell in love with Singapore the first time I visited. Right after my contract with the Navy ended in 2017, I moved to San Francisco to work at Tesla, and then I took a job at my current company, KLA. I took the job knowing it was based in San Francisco, but I kept telling my boss that I would be interested in moving to Singapore if the opportunity arose. Singapore is so safe that it's difficult to explain to AmericansI lived in the Tenderloin in San Francisco. I'll happily return to America to visit but not to liveSingapore is one of the most expensive cities in the world, but when I lived in San Francisco, the rent was even more expensive.

On January 25, seven members of Bi-2, a popular Russian-Belarusian rock band, were arrested in Thailand before a planned performance. The band left Russia after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has been performing for Russian expats abroad while also speaking out against the war. VPI Event, the concert organizer, said it had obtained the incorrect permit, according to The Times, but said the band members' arrest was unusual. But Dmitri Gudkov, an exiled Russian politician who knows the band, told The Times the push to send the band to Russia was a "special operation." Maksim Galkin, an anti-war Russian comedian, also said he was being targeted by Russia.

Relatives of tourists killed in the 2002 terrorist bombing in Bali, Indonesia, spoke of endless, devastating grief, and two prisoners who conspired in the attack renounced violence in the name of Islam on Thursday for a U.S. military jury assembled at Guantánamo Bay to deliberate their sentence. The prisoners, Mohammed Farik Bin Amin and Mohammed Nazir Bin Lep, both Malaysians, pleaded guilty last week to war crimes charges for conspiring with an affiliate of Al Qaeda that carried out the attack. He was born after his uncle, Nathaniel Dan Miller, 31, was killed in the bombing and read a statement written by the victim’s mother, his grandmother. Christopher Snodgrass of Glendale, Ariz., said the loss of his daughter, Deborah, 33, in the bombing and other “terrorist activities worldwide” left him despising “over 20 percent of the world population, Muslims. I’m a religious person, and the hate-filled person I have become is certainly not what I wanted.”

Frank Heffernan thought his daughter Megan was in South Korea where she was working as an English teacher when he heard the news of a devastating terrorist attack on the Indonesian island of Bali on Oct. 12, 2002. She had gone there with friends on a vacation. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her,” said Mr. Heffernan, mopping his eyes with a tissue at his home in Florida. In the random, cruel fashion of terrorism, the bombing killed tourists and workers from 22 nations who happened to be in a commercial district, including 38 Indonesians. Among the dead were Australian and British citizens who were there for a rugby match, Americans passionate about surfing — and Megan and two Korean friends, who were out sightseeing when the bombs exploded.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Sometimes it can be easy to forget that President Joe Biden's original foreign policy priority was reasserting American influence in Asia. Financial Stability Board (FSB) Chair Klaas Knot arrives for the G20 Leaders' Summit in Bali, Indonesia, November 15, 2022. Mast Irham/Pool via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsFRANKFURT, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The Financial Stability Board, a global risk watchdog, plans to issue new liquidity recommendations for some investments funds after bouts of stress in recent years risked spreading over to the broader financial sector, the head of the FSB said on Thursday. "Looking ahead, we will soon issue policy recommendations to address liquidity mismatches in open ended funds," Klaas Knot, the head of the FSB and the governor of the Dutch central bank said in a speech on Thursday. Open-ended investment funds tend to sit on long term assets but their investors often have the option for short-term redemptions, creating a liquidity mismatch in periods of high stress. FSB recommendations are not binding but serve as vital guidelines for local regulators and supervisors setting ground rules.

San Francisco CNN —President Joe Biden hopes to walk away from his closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday having put the US-China relationship on steadier footing after months of tension between the two superpowers. Biden administration officials have been working ever since to restore the channel, but those efforts were hampered by the tense episode involving a Chinese spy balloon that Biden ordered shot down earlier this year. And American officials have watched carefully as China scales up its military exercises in the water and air around the island. A political tight ropeAs Biden was preparing for Wednesday’s summit, Republicans questioned his decision to seek a meeting with Xi. The deal, which has been a priority for the Biden administration, would target companies that produce and export the source material to make the deadly synthetic opioid.
